Sewing came to me as an unexpected craft. I made a skirt in my home-economics class in high school and didn't really enjoy it. I studied Portuguese embroidery as a teen in Brazil. My teacher was rigid and I was a little scared of her. But, I remembered what she taught me and over the years would draw back on that instruction. I had been working with clay in the mid-80's and finally found it too difficult to fit studio space and time into my part time job schedules. I needed a replacement and it had to be something that I could do at home. I started out making fun hats and then moved into quilts and textiles. I like texture and know that I am influenced by the ethnic textiles that I sell. But, I also have my own twist to how I combine all of these elements. The links below document some of what I have done. Although I prefer to work big, larger pieces are time consuming and become prohibitive to sell competitively. Fortunately, I have had a couple of commissions that allowed me to explore some ideas on a larger scale.
