Selling online begs for good photos.  Customers can't touch or hold your item, so they need to see it in their heads.  You have to make them see it by providing good photos and product descriptions.  I've taken thousands of photos over the years, and although it can be a tedious chore, I work hard at getting good shots quickly.  I shoot outside on cloudy days and use Photoshop Elements to edit the images.  If you sell one of a kind items like I do, learning how to photograph is essential to succeeding at your business.  However, if you do not have these skills and sell multiples of the same, it makes sense to hire someone who can do the job for you.  Hiring someone to photograph one-of-a kind items will eat into your profit margin and is only worth it on high ticket items.

Here are some samples of product photos that I currently have in my folders:

I normally photograph five shots of larger textiles: front, back and detail shots.  Smaller pieces don't need as many.  It's important to be quick and to move through product efficiently.  I choose to keep photos as simple as possible with few or no props, focusing only on the product to be sold.  However, it can be worthwhile to create settings to show how products can be used, especially if the photo can be used for a long period of time.
